NEW YORK (AP) - On an emotional opening day, the New York Yankees honored Cory Lidle, welcomed back Bobby Murcer and beat Tampa Bay for a satisfying start.

Jason Giambi and Alex Rodriguez came through with big hits and the Yankees even got a few encouraging innings from Carl Pavano in a 9-5 victory Monday over the baby-faced Devil Rays.

Schilling says he'll pitch in 2008 season

BOSTON (AP) - Curt Schilling said Monday he will not retire at the end of the 2007 season as previously indicated and plans to pitch for the Boston Red Sox in 2008.

The 40-year-old Schilling made his comments on WEEI-AM radio and confirmed them to The Associated Press.

The right-hander's contract with the Red Sox ends after the 2007 season, but he said he was in discussions for an extension. If he can't work out a deal in Boston, he will pitch for another team - but not the New York Yankees.

Yankees pitcher among two killed; no mayday call was received

NEW YORK - Investigators were on the scene Thursday trying to determine why a four-seat, single-engine plane owned by Yankees baseball pitcher Cory Lidle crashed into a condominium tower on Manhattan's Upper East Side, killing Lidle and a second person who has yet to be identified.

A New York police spokesman said the crash was being investigated as an accident and that while police could not rule out suicide, there was nothing to suggest that. The investigation was being led by the National Transportation Safety Board.

NEW YORK (AP) - Joe Torre will remain as manager of the New York Yankees, finally getting the word from owner George Steinbrenner after the team's surprise elimination from the playoffs last weekend.
Torre spoke with Steinbrenner on the telephone Tuesday, shortly before he walked into the interview room at Yankee Stadium and made the announcement.
"He gave me his support," Torre said. "I'm just pleased I'm able to stay on and do this."
