FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) - Colorado State coach Dale Layer was fired Monday after a 17-13 season and sixth-place finish in the Mountain West Conference.
Athletic director Paul Kowalczyk said it was "time to move in a different direction." Layer had a year left on his contract.
Layer had a 103-106 record over seven years. Colorado State went 6-10 in the league this season.
The coach declined comment and was not present when Kowalczyk made the announcement.

Steve McClain has been fired as head coach of the University of Wyoming basketball team, sources close to the program told FOXSports.com.
Wyoming finished the season 17-15, including a 7-9 mark in the Mountain West Conference, but the Cowboys missed the postseason for the fourth consecutive year.
McClain posted a 157-115 record in six years at Wyoming, but his most successful seasons were his earlier ones.
Two teams, UNLV and BYU, made the NCAA tournament this year out of the Mountain West.
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) - Ron Jirsa is out as Marshall's basketball coach after a 13-19 season.
His firing comes four days after Marshall ended its season with a 92-71 loss to Memphis in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament.
The decision was announced Monday by athletic director Bob Marcum, who said a search committee is being formed.
