Report: Terrell Owens Attempted Suicide
Dallas Cowboys receiver Terrell Owens tried to commit suicide by overdosing on pain medication on Tuesday night, according to a police report obtained by WFAA-TV, a Dallas-Ft. Worth TV station.
In a news conference Wednesday afternoon, Dallas Cowboys coach Bill Parcells said he hasn't spoken to Owens and is "not really sure" what happened Tuesday night.
"I've got to get a little clearer picture. Most of the people here probably know more than I do," he told reporters. "I'm just a coach. I'm trying to get this team ready to play Tennessee. I'm talking with a good deal of ignorance on the subject. I don’t even really know where he is at this point."
Asked if Owens would play in Sunday's game, Parcells said, "I would like to be more clear before I talk about the future."
Owens, 32, is scheduled to talk to the press at a news conference Wednesday afternoon.
The police report states that an unidentified woman told officers that Owens had filled a prescription of 40 pills but had, until Tuesday, only taken five. The report states that Owens was asked if he'd taken the rest of the pills; he replied, "Yes." When asked if he was trying to harm himself, he said, "Yes."
Owens, who had broken his hand in a Sept. 17 football game, told the female friend "that he was depressed," according to the report, which also says that the friend "noticed that (his) prescription pain medication was empty and observed (Owens) putting two pills in his mouth."
Owens was treated for a drug overdose and released from the hospital Wednesday morning.
Police spokesperson Lt. Rick Watson confirmed at a news conference that police had been summoned Tuesday night. "When the officers got there, they were greeted by the paramedics who were treating Mr. Owens," he said.
However, Owens's publicist said he was hospitalized for an allergic reaction to the pain medicine he was taking for his hand, the Associated Press reports. And Parcells said last week that the pain medicine Owens had been taking for his hand made him ill.
Owens has been one of the NFL's top receivers during his 11-year career. He signed a $25 million three-year deal with the Cowboys in March. "I'm a star among stars now," Owens said at a news conference after signing the deal.
