BALTIMORE (AP) - Ravens kickoff returner B.J. Sams was charged with driving under the influence, his second DUI arrest in 14 months that could mean a four-game suspension.

Sams was stopped shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday on the outer loop of the Baltimore Beltway, according to Sgt. Kimberly Smith. His SUV reportedly swerved and nearly hit a vehicle, police said. When a trooper pulled Sams over, the officer smelled alcohol. Police would not say if he took a breath test.
Sams was released Tuesday and driven home by a friend. No court date has been set.

Ravens spokesman Kevin Byrne said the team has spoken to Sams and "will now let due process take its course."

A second violation could result in a four-game suspension, according to the league's substance-abuse policy. The decision is based on a review by the NFL commissioner.

In August 2005, Sams was traveling 89 mph in a 55 mph zone and was charged with driving under the influence, negligent driving and speeding. He was put on probation.

Sams is averaging 30.9 yards on kickoff returns, second in the league, for the Ravens (4-0). He ranks ninth on punt returns.
